The Why
The impetus behind starting a new chapter in my software engineering career, and what I hope Not Your Language becomes.
I bought the domain notyourlanguage.com a while back for my personal site. I felt like what I wanted to say with regards to engineering transcended programming languages, and I still feel that way. Now however, I feel like the reasons behind my messaging has changed from self-promotion to education and progression.
With AI sparking the industrialization of software engineering there are now a lot of unanswered questions. What skills are no longer necessary? How do we develop the new skills needed to stay relevant?
Though I will give my own thoughts on those questions at various points throughout the life of this site, for now I want to focus on another set of questions - “How do you become a senior engineer in the age of AI?” and “What is a senior engineer now anway?”
I feel like the latter question has an easy answer; being a senior engineer means what it always has. The skills which make someone a senior engineer haven’t drastically changed with AI. There are definitely more things to learn, and maybe different ways to learn them but those things are not mutually exclusive to what was needed prior to AI. What has changed is how you develop those skills.
So, how do you become a senior engineer in the age of AI?
Stick around and find out through a series of hand-crafted experiences and exercises. Each monthly drop is designed to teach or reinforce important concepts for every engineer, regardless of language and stack.
